We're on the Move!

"Ask & Imagine" is the name given to our relocation effort. Throughout our history, we have been a people of vision. It was vision that led the first 24 members, and it is vision that drives us now. That vision has led to the purchase of a beautiful and spacious plot of land on Houston Levee where we will begin the next exciting phase of Highland's history.

Every time we have asked for God's blessing, he has responded in greater ways than we had even imagined. We eagerly expect the same to be true in Highland's future.

Update on Briarcrest
Two weeks ago we shared with you the opportunity for us to explore the purchase of Briarcrest Christian School. We want to reiterate that Houston Levee is still our planned relocation site since it rests in a high growth area and offers a large amount of property. We have, however, investigated the impact of rising construction costs and concluded that changes will need to be made to our original construction plans.

We believe BCS is a viable alternative to HL because it is a very large facility in a central location in the city that enables us to do many kinds of ministries. In addition, it is available for a lower price than when we negotiated a few years ago to purchase BC. We are, however, presently conducting a feasibility study of the facility, largely centered around the operating costs of that facility.

No final decision has been made. There is much information we still do not know, but we are negotiating an agreement with BCS which will give us access to all necessary information. If we proceed successfully through that negotiation, we intend to share all of that information with the congregation at a future date.

Pray about Briarcrest Possibility
Three weeks ago Briarcrest Christian school initiated contact with us to see if we wanted to purchase their facility at Poplar and I-240.  This is same facility we tried to purchase twice before purchasing our Houston Levee property.

Because of our previous interest in the facility and because their recent offer has much to commend it, we felt compelled to bring this matter before God in prayer.  We asked the staff and other leaders to join us in this time of prayer.

Through prayer, we believe God is urging us to further investigate Briarcrest’s offer.  To do this, we have signed a letter of intent which gives us 60 days to collect more information.  We want to get enough information so that we can compare a relocation to Briarcrest with our current plans to relocate to Houston Levee.

We do not know what the answer will be.  No decisions have been made.  We believe God will make his will clearer as we investigate and pray.

As we get additional details, we will bring them before you so you can help us compare relocation to Briarcrest with relocation to Houston Levee.  The Finance Committee is helping us understand some of the financial issues involved in this matter.  In addition, the staff is working on ministry proposals which can help Highland grow regardless of the path God leads us down.

We want to ask you to join us in prayer.  Pray.

Progress on Closing at 443 S. Highland
On Sunday, November 11, the elders announced that they had granted an extension which will allow Poag to get the approval needed from the City Council and County Commission. Both groups have met once and had initial positive votes on the Poag project and Poag financing. There are several more meetings coming up with the City Council and County Commission. Please pray that they go positively. We anticipate closing with Poag in 4 or 5 weeks.

Faithful in Giving
It has been over six months since Commitment Sunday, and the pledges are rolling in! We've even had an additional $25,000 given that was not originally pledged. Highland is faithful in giving!

Progress on Sale of 443 S. Highland
Poag & McEwen (P&M) are paying the monthly interest on the land at Houston Levee and the land at Highland Street, in addition to the $325,000 in escrow. They report that negotiations with the City of Memphis are going very well, and they expect to close on the current building at the end of November.

Building Plans
We are working with the architect on the schematic design, and the civil engineering is in progress. Contractors are currently being interviewed. Click here for more detail on the building and site plans.
